Mayor Mike McGinn Proclaims June 5, 2012 is Washington Talking Book & Braille Library Day!


Last night, WTBBL’s Danielle Miller, Eura, Theresa and Sally Jo attended a wonderful event organized by the Seattle Human Services Coalition where WTBBL was honored with the Mayor’s Award and Proclamation for our work empowering individuals with disabilities.  At the event, Mayor Mike McGinn proclaimed June 5, 2012 as Washington Talking Book & Braille Library Day. 

Also attending were WTBBL patron Quincy, volunteer book narrator Mary, and National Library Service consultant Pamela Davenport.

Mayor McGinn presented Danielle and Quincy with the following proclamation in print and braille.

Text reads: City of Seattle Office of the Mayor - PROCLAMATION - WHEREAS, Seattle's libraries are leaders in making literacy, information, and community available to all residents regardless of ability; and WHEREAS, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, headquartered in Seattle contributes to the local empowerment of individuals with disabilities and improves educational and professional opportunities and overall quality of life through the provision of books, periodicals, information, and training opportunities in accessible formats; and WHEREAS, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library helps build connections, opportunities, and personal and professional growth through free and equal access to information, and through partnerships with local disability organizations to foster a life long love of reading from birth to end of life; and WHEREAS, the programs and services offered by the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library contribute significantly to meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities and the disability community at large: free library service to any resident unable to read standard print material, locally produced audio and braille books, volunteer and professional development opportunities, education and training, youth and family programs, book clubs, author interviews, programs and events, advocacy; and WHEREAS, Seattle residents value commitment and services that make the world a more equitable, accessible, and accepting place to live for all; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike McGinn, mayor ofthe City of Seattle, do hereby proclaim June 5, 2012 Washington Talking Book & Braille Library Day In Seattle, and I call upon public officials, educators, businesses, communities, volunteers, and all the people of Seattle, Washington to observe this day, and to celebrate thes e accomplishments and efforts towards a more equitable society.
