The Library's Summer Reading Program in large print, braille, and on cassette helps keep reading skills active over the summer months for kids 6-12 years old. Reading even one book earns a prize. An announcement about each year's program is posted here in May. The WTBBL collection includes fiction and non-fiction books on cassette, in braille, and in large print for school-aged readers. Books and cassette machines are available for both home and classroom use. Our children’s librarian can help parents and students find books. The Sasquatch Award is given to a chapter book written for grades 4 through 8. The award winner is selected by the children of Washington state each spring. If you read two or more of the books from the Sasquatch list of nominees on the WTBBL webpage Sasquatch Books, you can vote in March of 2006 for your favorite! This program is sponsored by the Washington Library Media Association. More details and instructions on how to vote are found on the WLMA Sasquatch webpage of the Washington Library Media Association website.
Children, teens, their families, and friends are periodically invited to the Library for performances designed to include children with no usable vision. Future perfomances and events will be listed here as they are scheduled.
Visit our showcase children's room and sample the services it holds for your infant or toddler with vision loss. Besides a rotating collection of accessible toys and baby books with braille added, we offer toddler books on tape. These are engaging, currently-popular young children's books which last only 3-7 minutes on one side of one tape. They can be used here at the Library or checked out for use at home. They are just right for the two-year-old who wants to practice independence. Let your child learn to put a tape into the cassette player and push the "on" button!
The Braille BugThis website is an interactive channel on AFB's website created to teach sighted children about braille and to encourage literacy among all children, both sighted and visually impaired. Children in grades 3 through 6 will enjoy playing the games and sending secret messages to friends.
