This award is given to the best English language novel written by a citizen of the British Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.

2002 -- Life of Pi by Yaan Martel. Pi Patel, the sole human survivor of a shipwreck, is in a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with an injured zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and an adult Bengal tiger. Cassette book RC 54950. Large print book LP 19697.
2001 -- True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. Before his execution, Kelly writes letters to his daughter describing his life, from being apprenticed to a highwayman to robbing rich Englishmen who despised the Irish. Cassette book RC 53638.
2000 -- The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Iris, now elderly, recalls what led up to the 1945 death of her younger sister Laura. Interspersed is a novel-within-a-novel, Laura's post-humously published book. Cassette book RC 50848.
1999 -- Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee. Divorced, fifty-two-year-old professor David Lurie is dismissed from a Cape Town university for seducing a twenty-year-old student and retreats to his daughter's farm. Cassette book RC 49263.
