Recommended Reads for Adults - August 2007


To continue our monthly book lists, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library would like to recommend some books that start rip roaring series set in the West. Did you know that WTBBL can add a series to your patron record and send you the books in that series in the correct order? Simply call the Library and ask for Readers' Advisory or e-mail wtbbl@wtbbl.org and we will get you started with the first book. When you return the first book in the series, we will send you the second book and so on until you finish the whole kit and caboodle or tell us to stop. Whether you are a greenhorn or an old hand, these books will be sure to please.

August, 2007 -- The Saga Begins: Western Series

Trail Of The Spanish Bit by Don Coldsmith. Great Plains, 1540. Juan Garcia, a member of Coronado 's camp, is found by a native tribe after he is thrown from his horse. Juan is nursed back to health and teaches the people horse-breeding, which will change their entire way of life. First of 28 books in the Spanish Bit saga. Cassette book RC 31200.

The Goodnight Trail by Ralph Compton. Four Texas Rangers out of work at the end of the Civil War try to make a living rounding up unclaimed longhorns and blazing a new cattle trail through the mining country of New Mexico and Colorado. The Last Mountain Man by William W. Johnstone. Two years after Kirby Jensen and his father headed west from their Missouri farm, Kirby's father is killed, and Kirby is out for revenge. Dead Man's Walk by Larry McMurtry. Young Woodrow Call and Gus McCrae join the Texas Rangers and set out on an expedition to take Santa Fe from the Mexicans. Sun River by Richard S. Wheeler. 1855. Mr. Skye and his two Native American wives reluctantly agree to lead a party of missionaries to the Blackfoot Nation. Dissention grows among the group as Mr. Skye tries to lead the tenderfoots safely through land controlled by the Crow and patrolled by the Cheyenne . First of 16 books in the Skye's West series.
