Recommended Reads for Adults - August 2008


To continue our monthly series of book lists, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library would like to recommend the following fiction about the Vietnam war.

August, 2008 - Vietnam War

Finding Moon by Tony Hillerman.  In 1975, Moon Mathias, a low-key Colorado newspaperman, learns that when his pilot brother crashed just prior to the fall of Vietnam, he left behind a Eurasian infant daughter.  Cassette book RC 41700.  Large print book LP 12498.

The Sorrow of War: A Novel of North Vietnam by Bao Ninh.  Working in a unit that recovers soldiers’ corpses in the aftermath of the Vietnam war, a North Korean soldier is haunted by his memories.  Cassette book RC 41708.

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien.  Twenty-two related short stories about young American soldiers in Vietnam.  Cassette book RC 34768.

The Memorial by James Amos.  As Jake Adams stands at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall touching the names of his buddies, he remembers his experiences in the war.

Rolling Thunder by Mark Berent.  The story of three men and the war in Vietnam.  A son tries to prove he is as good as his father, a starry-eyed kid joins an intelligence unit, and a Colonel volunteers to rescue a downed pilot.  Cassette book RC 30721.

Up Country by Nelson Demille.  Retired army investigator Paul Brenner’s former boss coerces him into documenting the murder -- thirty years ago in Vietnam -- of one American officer by another, witnessed by an enemy soldier.  Cassette book RC 53667.  Braille book BR 15543.  Large print book LP 18593.

1968 by Joe Haldeman.  Portrays a year in the life of a young American soldier who endures some of the most brutal combat of the Vietnam War.  Wounded and paranoid, he returns home to face a harsh readjustment.  Cassette book RC 43735.
