To continue our monthly series of book lists for children and teens, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library would like to recommend the following titles:

May, 2006 -- Dog Tales!

The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin. Squirrel, a stray puppy, tells her life story. After being orphaned, she and her brother Bone faced humans both gentle and brutal, other animals, changing seasons, and busy highways. Grades 4-7. Cassette book RC 60787.

Bark, George by Jules Feiffer. George can quack and meow and moo, but no “arf” comes out. Can the vet help him? Grades P-2. Print/braille book BR 12040.

Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion. When a white dog with black spots runs away from home, he gets so dirty his family doesn't recognize him as their own black dog with white spots. Grades P-2. Braille book BR 14034.

Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant. Imagine what dog heaven must be like: plenty of fields for running, lots of children to play with, and biscuits of all shapes and sizes. Grades K-3. Cassette book RC 42556.

Dogzilla by Dav Pilkey. A monstrous mutt (actually a Corgi) terrorizes Mousepolis. Grades K-2. Braille book BRW 474. Cassette book CBA 6052.

Henry and Mudge: The First Book of Their Adventures by Cynthia Rylant. Follow the adventures of seven-year-old Henry and his best friend, a big, drooling dog named Mudge. An early reader for Grades K-2. Braille book BRW 648. Cassette book RC 55800. Llarge print book 13583. (Look for other adventures starring Henry and Mudge!)

I'm Not Going to Chase the Cat Today! by Jessica Harper. One day the dog decides not to chase the cat, the cat decides not to chase the mouse, the mouse decides not to chase the lady, and they all have a party. Grades P-2. Cassette book CBA 7209.

Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. Jack doesn't want to write poetry for his teacher, Miss Stretchberry, because girls do it, not boys. As the school year progresses, Jack surprises even himself with his poems. Grades 4-7. Braille book BR 14137.

No More Dead Dogs by Gordon Korman. Eighth-grade football hero Wallace Wallace is sent to detention for telling the truth and is sentenced to attend rehearsals for the school play. Grades 5-8. Cassette book RC 53822.

Sammy Keyes and the Runaway Elf by Wendelin Van Draanen. Problems quickly escalate when seventh-grader Sammy Keyes escorts a Pomeranian in a parade and a dognapping occurs. Grades 5-8. Braille book BR 50902. Cassette book RC 52669.
