To continue our monthly series of book lists for youth, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library would like to recommend the following titles:

Fifty Saves His Friend by Martin Boynton. Fifty, the tractor, loves doing his job and telling bedtime stories to his friend Norris, the rat. When Norris gets into danger, Fifty proves he's a very good friend. Grades P-2. Braille book BR 7133.

The Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber. Mowzer the cat tells the tale of how she and her human, an old fisherman named Tom, saved their tiny Cornish fishing village from starvation at Christmas time. Grades P-2. Cassette book RC 35244.

Akiak: A Tale From The Iditarod by Robert J. Blake. Akiak is the lead dog in a sled team running the ten-day Iditarod race. Even after she's pulled from the race because of an injury, Akiak refuses to give up and follows the team on her own. Grades K-3. Print/Braille book BR 12007.

Bentley and the Egg by William Joyce. Easily bored, Bently, the frog, paints Kack Kack's egg while “egg-sitting”. When a boy picks it up, mistaking it for an Easter egg, Bently must plan a daring rescue mission. Grades K-3. Cassette book RC 36650.

The Climb by Carol Carrick. Nora is angry because Brendan's afraid on a mountain hike she thinks is easy. When the mean trick she plans backfires, putting her in real danger, she learns that her cousin is braver than she thought. Grades 2-4. Cassette book RC 22881.

Dingoes at Dinnertime by Mary Pope Osborne. When the magic tree house lands Jack and Annie in Australia, they meet koalas, kangaroos, and dingoes and experience the dangers of a wildfire. #20 in Magic Tree House Series. Grades 2-4. Braille book BR 14207. Cassette book RC 54430.

Hurricane by Faith McNulty. While everybody hurries to prepare for the hurricane headed their way, John worries that the tree house he and his dad built won't survive the storm. Grades 3-6. Cassette book RC 21839.

The Secret Journey by Peg Kehret. In 1834, 12-year-old Emma stows away on the wrong ship -- a slaver bound for Africa. When it sinks, she must muster her courage and resourcefulness to survive in the jungle. Grades 3-6. Large print book LP 19874.

Lost In The Devil's Desert by Gloria Skurzynski. Kevin finds himself stranded in the desert without provisions after two escaped convicts steal his dad's truck with him in it. Grades 4-7. Braille book BR 5426. Cassette book RC 19148.

Titanic Crossing by Barbara Williams. With his father's recent death, his mother's unhappiness, and his sister's annoying behavior, 13-year-old Albert has enough to worry about even before the events of the ill-fated Titanic begin to unfold. Buccaneers by Iain Lawrence. In the eighteenth century, 16-year-old John Spencer sails from England to the Caribbean in his schooner, the Dragon, where he and the crew encounter pirates, fierce storms, fever, and a strange man who some fear may be cursed. #3 in The High Seas Trilogy series. Chasing Bears: A Canoe Country Adventure by Earl Fleck. When his reckless father and competitive older brother are injured in an accident during a canoe trip in the Canadian wilderness, 12-year-old Danny must overcome his fears to help them. Grades 5-8. Forbidden City: A Novel by William Bell. Seventeen-year-old Alex accompanies his photojournalist father to China in 1989. After the violence in Tiananmen Square, Alex finds himself injured and alone carrying provocative film the Chinese government wants to destroy. Some violence. Grade 6 and up. Rescue Josh McGuire by Ben Mikaelsen. When thirteen-year-old Josh heads for the mountains of Montana with an orphaned bear cub destined for laboratory testing, they both must fight for their lives in a sudden snowstorm. Grade 6 and up. Braille book BRW 731. Cassette book CBA 6822.

True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. Circumstances land Charlotte on an unsuitable ship as she follows her family to America. She finds she must abandon her prim and proper upbringing and depend on her wits to survive in a struggle between the cruel captain and a mutinous crew. Grade 6 and up. Braille book BR 13299. Wild Man Island by Will Hobbs. Fourteeen-year-old Andy slips away from his kayaking group to visit the Alaskan wilderness site where his father died.
